Honeymoon Eats - Culinary Adventures in Oahu, Hawaii - Part 3

Foursquare to the rescue! A few days in to our Honeymoon and we were absolutely and terribly annoyed by how much we were spending on food. It wasn't unusual for us to spend $40 on breakfast, $60 on dinner and $80-$90 on dinner and we were not even eating that extravagantly. Thanks to a tip on Foursquare, we found out that Wolfgang's Steakhouse in Honolulu had $10 lunches. $10! We can afford that.

Carlos got the Half-Pound Hamburger with Fries and Onion Rings. Boy was this burger huge! We usually don't eat out like this but good grief we were so incredibly hungry on this trip. This kind of meal would only last us 2-3 hours.

I got the Mahi Mahi sandwich which came with a tartar sauce as well as fries and onion rings. This was by far the best Mahi Mahi I had when I was in Oahu. I think the secret was that they didn't over-salt it which is what most of the other restaurants had done. I'm really glad I got it! It was moist, flaky and flavorful. Also the portion of Mahi Mahi on the sandwich was quite generous.

That day we explored Waikiki Beach and Honolulu. It was lovely but too crowded for us. We are glad we stayed at the North Shore.

Then we headed to Kailua Beach on the Eastern Shore of Oahu.

We had dinner at a little dive called Buzz's Original Steakhouse. Our waiter was so nice to us. He looked like he could have been Barack Obama's long lost son. He told us all about Kailua and how the restaurant gets fresh fish caught by local fisherman every single day.

Their menus are on these fun paddles!

Carlos sure loved his Lava Flos!

And I sure loved my Mai Tai's. Don't be fooled by this small little drink. It packed a whallop. Like the Mai Tai I had at Lei Lei's in the North Shore, this one had 3 different types of rum. But Buzz's was very generous with the rum. Too generous. After one drink, I wanted to party with everyone!

Every entree came with the option to build your own salad at the salad bar.

Here is my salad. It was an odd mix of beets, sprouts, carrots, onion, pepperoncinis, tomato, lettuce , green beans and more. Their salad dressing options left a lot to be desired so I stuck with a basic balsamic. And I really do not like balsamic but in this case I tolerated it.

Carlos got a steak dinner. Unfortunately it came with two vegetables he despises: summer squash and zucchini. Oh well!

And I got the Butterfish which came with a side of butter (which it really didn't need).

I told you that Mai Tai was strong. Whee!!!

For lunch the next day we stopped at the famous Ted's Bakery on the North Shore of Oahu. It was by far the closest eatery to Turtle Bay Resort as you could get. It was praised to the skies by many sources but for me this was an utter disappointment. I got a grilled shrimp sandwich which I thought would be bread, grilled shrimp and fresh toppings. What I got was this rather disgusting Shrimp & Cheese Croque-Monsieur type sandwich. Blech.

Carlos got the Loco Moco which is a very traditional Hawaiian plate. Carb and calorie overload! It's hamburger steak on top of rice and topped off with a poached egg and gravy. And yes, that's heavily mayo-ed macaroni salad on the side. Macaroni salad seemed to be a popular side in Hawaii.

Ted's Bakery is particularly known for their Haupia Pie. Locals and tourists alike flock here to pick up Haupia Pie by the slice or by the whole pie. Haupia is a chocolate coconut cream pie. Our Haupia Pie slice came in this triangular plastic container with an ingredient label. Once I saw the label I was terribly disappointed. I saw High Fructose Corn Syrup as one of the ingredients. HCFS? I thought this Haupia Pie was home made? I'm guessing one of the ingredients is bought elsewhere and contains HCFS but it was still disappointing. I'd rather get a freshly made Haupia Pie with more natural ingredients somewhere else. (Now I'm waiting for Audrae-Erickson to leave one of her stupid comments on this blog. Go suck it Audrae! I HATE HCFS!).

End rant.

I'm sure there was tons of great food at Ted's Bakery but I didn't have any of it and wasn't going back for a second try.

Stay tuned for Part 4 of my Honeymoon Eats series.
