In-N-Out Burger - Los Angeles, CA

On our way to our honeymoon in Hawaii, Carlos and I had a 2-1/2 hour layover in Los Angeles, California. It wasn't much time to sight see but it was enough time to head to an In-N-Out Burger for a meal. When Carlos lived in California over a decade ago, this was his favorite eatery. Every time he visit California, the In-N-Out Burger on South Sepulveda Boulevard which is a stones throw from the LAX airport would be his very first stop.

We took a cab from the airport to go to the In-N-Out Burger. Their minimum was a $19 cab ride so we decided to do a roundtrip to get our money's worth.

I was very excited to try In-N-Out Burger after years of hearing Carlos rave about it. And we were finally here!

We were ravenous so I ordered 2 cheeseburgers, Carlos ordered 2 Double-Doubles (2 patty burgers with 2 slices of cheese) and we both shared an order of fries. I have never ordered 2 burgers let alone ate 2 burgers in one sitting. I must have been very hungry after that 6-1/2 hour plane ride!

In-N-Out Burger is a family run business that started in Irvine, California in 1948. It's a relatively small chain and they keep it small to maintain the quality and service. We live in the Boston area and the only In-N-Out Burgers are in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and one location in Texas. We really wish they would open a Boston location!

So what exactly is so special about an In-N-Out Burger?  It's the whole package: the 100% high-quality beef patties made fresh every day, fresh baked spongy hamburger buns, the cheddar cheese, the fresh toppings (onion, lettuce and tomato) as well as the sauce which is good quality Thousand Island Dressing.

There is a lot of lingo that goes into the In-N-Out Burger. Here Carlos is with his Double-Double. You can order a 3x3 or a 4x4 if you really like your meat. There is Animal style which comes with mustard, pickles and grilled onions. There are lots of different was to order the burgers but the menu is pretty basic. Cheeseburger, Double-Double, Fries and Drinks. That's it. So any variation is ordered by people in the know.

Carlos was so excited to bite into his Double-Double he didn't even want to take the time to remove his backpack before diving in!

My first bites.

Yum! This is delicious.

Carlos loved In-N-Out Burger's fries but I thought they were so-so. In fact they were kind of stale. In-N-Out Burger's website says their fries are cooked in "cholesterol-free vegetable oil" which is a big joke. Of course it's cholesterol free! Cholesterol only comes from animal products. Duh! They do hand-cut their fries and cook them fresh.

They claim to have no microwaves or freezers. Everything is super fresh and their menu is simple. I like that because it means good quality eats in the end.

All-in-all, In-n-Out Burger didn't disappoint. I'd come back for another Cheeseburger and maybe a try at one of their famous milkshakes.

Jealous! That sauce looks so yummy. I may have to make a trip to LA just to have one of those burgers.

This, is the only reason I regret going vegetarian. :o( We live within a short 15 minute drive to an In-N-Out and it tempts me constantly. Growing up with this it became part of my family's history. I love it! I'm so so glad you were able to stop there on your way to Hawaii. It's so good! And yes, if you ever go again try the shakes. My favorite is their chocolate shake, so good!!! ;o)
